Smog Testing

Certified STAR Smog Test

As far as emission tests are concerned, California has the toughest emission standards in the country. Although there are exceptions, smog inspections are required for vehicle registration and biennial registration renewals for vehicles in California and must be carried out at a STAR-certified facility like All Tune and Lube in La Habra.

What is a smog check?

  • A smog test is a type of routine vehicle inspection that measures the vehicle’s emission levels.
  • It also involves inspecting the emission control equipment installed on your vehicle.
  • This test is carried out to ensure the pollutant emission from the vehicle is within acceptable limits based on standards set by the California Department of Consumer Affairs' Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR)

What does a smog test entail?

Depending on the model year and type of vehicle, a smog inspection may include any of the following:

  • Visual inspection of your emission-control systems
  • Tailpipe emission measurement and inspection
  • Inspection of functional components of the vehicle that relate to emissions, such as the check engine light, exhaust recirculation system, ignition timing, gas cap and fuel evaporative system
  • Inspection of the on-board diagnostic (OBD) system

Who is exempted?

There are a number of exemptions to the California Smog Testing program. Generally, newer vehicle models, hybrid vehicles, and electric vehicles are the most notable groups that qualify for a smog test exemption. The following types of vehicles don’t need to get a smog test:

  • Gasoline-powered cars, motorcycles, and trailers that are 1975 models and older
  • Diesel-powered vehicles that are 1997 and older with a gross weight rating that is more than 14,000 lbs
  • Natural gas vehicles that weigh more than 14,000 lbs
  • Electric vehicles
  • Gasoline-powered vehicles with models less than 8 years old

In addition, the vehicle model and type of vehicle will also determine how often a smog test will be required and what the test would entail.
