STAR Certifications Means One-Stop Shopping at All Tune & Lube
In order to make California’s thorough smog check program more convenient for motorists, the Department of Consumer Affairs/Bureau of Automotive Repair (DCA/BAR) has created the STAR program. A licensed STAR smog check station meets higher performance standards and is authorized to provide a variety of emissions-related inspection and repair services to motorists. In addition to regular smog check inspection and repair services, STAR stations can issue certificates to cars that have failed tests, perform state subsidized repairs, and perform an “after repairs” certification test on vehicles that were directed to have a smog check at a Test Only station and then failed.
Some vehicles that fail their smog check are designated as “gross polluters” by the state. That sounds bad, and it is. Gross polluters are not only the worst polluting vehicles on the road, they often suffer from deterioration, major system defects, or an emission control system that desperately needs repair. As a gross polluter ordinarily requires a post-repair retest at a separate Test Only station, getting a car like this fixed can be a difficult and costly process. Inadequate repairs in some instances could cause these vehicles to ping pong between the service center and the Test Only station. This new STAR program certifies that outstanding facilities like the La Habra All Tune and Lube Center can provide “one stop shopping.” That means that we can both repair and test polluting vehicles.
A STAR station must meet strict testing and repair performance standards each calendar quarter; and submit to periodic performance inspections and monitoring by the Bureau of Automotive Repair.
Under the STAR Program, more effective testing and repairs will save drivers time and money while producing cleaner, better running vehicles. This helps California in its ongoing mission to improve the quality of the air that we breathe.

We Can Help
The Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) is designed to help improve California’s air quality. A customer can apply for a one time assistance of $500 for repairs towards a smog issue and can bring a waiver to us. The station has to be STAR certified for test and repair and CAP approved.
